Want to stay in Sayulita, Mexico? Here’s a quick guide to the different areas and how to book on the cheap.

Planning a stay in Sayulita, Mexico? Whether it’s a quick weekend getaway or an extended six-month stay, finding the perfect accommodations is key to a memorable experience. In this guide, we’ll explore various booking options and provide insider tips on securing the ideal place for your Sayulita adventure!

Booking Options

Airbnb

Our first time coming to Sayulita, we booked our Airbnb for 3 months through Airbnb. While it wasn’t cheap (CAD $5,245.69 total, or CAD $1,781.89 monthly, tax included), it was convenient and at the time, we were comfortable with using the platform and paying a little more because we had never been to Sayulita. Keep in mind, we booked this in August of 2021 for January – March 2022. Since that time, the price for the high season has gone through the roof, and in turn, availability has gone down, so if you go this route I recommend booking far in advance. Airbnb is a great starting place to see what accommodations you may be able to get in Sayulita.

Expedia

Friends of ours have booked through sites like Expedia or Booking.com. If you are looking to stay at a hotel or hostel this is a great place to start your search. While we haven’t stayed at hotels or hostels we have some recommendations below based on friends’ experiences:

  • Hotelito Los Sueños – local hotel with outdoor pool + yoga (North End, $$)
  • Don Bonito Hotel – bougie hotel with yoga and rooftop pool (North End, $$$)
  • Hotel Hafa – cute local hotel with rooftop plunge pool (South End / Central, $$)
  • Viajero Sayulita – hostel chain with outdoor pool + bar with co-working/wifi (South End, $)
  • Sister House – super cute women-only hostel with community events (South End, $)
  • Selina Hostel – boutique hostel chain with a pool and solid co-working/wifi (Central, $)
  • Sayulinda Hotel – bougie hotel with rooftop pool & bar (Central, $$$)

Sayulita Life

SayulitaLife.com is a website with over 650 owner-direct Sayulita rentals. This means that hosts don’t have to increase their listing price to cover the listing fee. While we haven’t rented through Sayulita Life, it is an excellent database of Sayulita rentals. Keep in mind that all prices will be in USD. This is an especially great source for long-term rentals. Beyond properties, Sayulita Life is a directory of local businesses and events. Anytime you search for something like ‘dentist in Sayulita on Google, you will likely be directed here.

This is where there is the highest potential to find a great deal, especially for short-term and last-minute rentals. Although, that isn’t to say you can’t find great long-term rentals here too. Prices will typically be in MXD, so you will want to have a currency converter handy. If you are interested in how we manage international currencies through Wise, we will have an article out on that soon. Also, beware of scammers! If something seems too good to be true, it probably is! You will also need to act fast as it can be quite competitive and busy within these groups.

Flyers

Okay, so this one requires you to actually be in Sayulita, but wanted to include it because it is how we found the apartment we stayed in this year Jan-May 2023. We saw a flyer on the street for the apartment across from our place at the end of our stay in March 2022 and went to go see the apartment. We stayed in touch and later it worked out for us to book the place last minute. We paid USD $1,300 ( CAD $1,761.83) monthly + weekly cleaning at MXN $400 (CAD $31.79 / USD $23.45). This was a 1 Bed/1 Bath and included high-speed internet, a filtered water tap, and covered parking.

While all of these options are ‘tried and true’ they also include a lot of fees (for both you and the host). So, while these may help you get a sense of what is available, we recommend checking out direct websites, WhatsApp, and Facebook.

What’s Included?

Lastly, here is a list of things you may want to have included with your place:

  • Drinking Water – For foreigners, Sayulita’s tap water is not safe to drink. Check with your stay if water is included. This could be through a filtered tap or providing a water cooler. If it isn’t you will need to factor water into your budget beyond rent
  • Golf Cart – For those living on a hill or far from central a golf cart can be a nice-to-have or need-to-have, depending on your mobility. Golf carts start at USD $50 daily, which can add up, so be sure to see if you can get a deal from your
  • High-Speed Internet – if you are working remotely you will likely want high-speed internet at home. If not you can pay for some co-working spots or try cafes. Sayulita’s fiber optic network has been expanding year-over-year
  • Cleaning – typically a weekly cleaning service is included but is often paid in MXN and directly to the cleaner. Prepare to add a tip to this
  • Laundry – this will typically not be included, but there are many lavanderías (wash & folds) that you can bring your laundry to and pick up 1-2 days later
  • Parking – if you will have a car in Sayulita (which isn’t necessary for most visits), you will want to get parking as street parking is very limited

Finding the perfect accommodations in Sayulita is a blend of research, planning, and flexibility.
